Building an Inclusive Economy: Our Five-Year Journey and Continued Plans for Growth

Deonna Barnett, CEO & Director of Consulting

When we embarked on this journey, our vision was clear: to create an inclusive economy. We set out to achieve this by equipping small businesses with the fundamentals of business planning and management, empowering them to enhance their operations and reach their financial goals. Our mission took shape in 2019 when we launched our first Business Planning Cohort at Central Community House. That same year, we acquired another consulting firm, enabling us to assist these businesses in obtaining certifications as minority, woman, or veteran-owned small businesses, preparing them for government and corporate contracts.

Over the past few years, we have been privileged to work with with esteemed organizations within our local small business ecosystem. This includes the Small Business Development Center at Columbus State, Cultivate Business Centers in Grove City, Pickerington, and London, OH, the Keenan Center at The Ohio State University, One Columbus and the Columbus Partnership, Rev1 Ventures, the Ohio Department of Transportation, the National Association of Women Business Owners (NAWBO) Columbus, and The Columbus Foundation, among others. From spearheading special projects like COVID-relief funding and diverse outreach initiatives to providing training and advisory services, we have broadened our expertise and developed a deep understanding of the challenges faced by small businesses.

To date, we have served over 1,200 businesses and provided more than 12,000 hours of consulting. Nearly 200 businesses have enrolled in our Business Planning Accelerator, and we have helped businesses access more than $5 million in funding, while maintaining a 100% certification approval rating.

Last year, we embarked on an intensive strategic planning process, resulting in a shift in our business model and the services we offer. After conducting extensive research to better understand our role in the ecosystem and the needs of our clients, we will be focusing on helping small businesses navigate the complexities of securing government and corporate contracts and becoming more competitive in the marketplace.

Now with a new vision for every business to excel without barriers, we have introduced several new services designed to streamline the contracting process, offer deeper insights, and ultimately help businesses secure more opportunities.

Through Advisory, we assist companies in identifying, vetting, and preparing for government and corporate contracts. This includes sending a personalized list of contract opportunities each month, tailored to the client’s capabilities and qualifications along with monthly advisory calls to help them navigate the procurement process and reach their revenue goals.

Consulting on special projects is also available. We offer proposal writing, personalized bid reports and assistance with certification applications and business plan development.

As we celebrate our five-year anniversary, we want to express our gratitude to each and every one of you. Your support, trust, and partnership have been the cornerstone of our success. We wouldn’t be where we are today without you, and we are sincerely thankful.
